Pupils Have A Ball With England Star

Bromley Times 22/10/2009

A World cup-winning cricketer gave a masterclass to a group of schoolchildren this week as part of an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) coaching scheme.

Hayes Hurricane's, Kent and England ace, Lydia Greenway, visited Hayes Primary School on Monday to give the budding youngsters tips, advice and training on how to succeed in sport.

It was the first in a long-term series of sessions throughout the Autumn and Spring terms for the ECB's Ambassador Coaching Programme which aims to recruit more girls into playing the game, and to develop and strengthen links between schools and clubs.

Greenway has enjoyed a triumphant year at the highest level of women's cricket, helping England prevail in the World Cup, the World Twenty20 tournament and the Ashes against Australia.

She will be coaching every Monday, with Pickhurst Junior School her next destination, followed by Bullers Wood School and then Keston C of E Primary. After that, she will lead sessions at Farnborough Primary, Green Street Green Primary and finally, Darrick Wood junior School.

The Hayes Hurricanes are English national club champions and the only club in the borough of Bromley with girls and women's cricket outfits - as well as colts and senior teams.

Hayes CC are also in the third year of the hugely-successful Chance to Shine programme in local schools, developing and strenghtening school and club links.
